Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex mental illness marked by unstable moods, behaviors, and relationships. BPD can be challenging to live with, both for the person with the disorder as well as his or her family and friends. Researchers are beginning to learn about the causes of BPD and how to manage the illness.

Why is BPD called “borderline”? Because some people with severe BPD have brief psychotic episodes, experts originally considered this illness to be “borderline” versions of other mental illnesses. Today BPD is a recognized mental illness in and of itself. However, experts have yet to call it by a more accurate term.

The good news is that borderline personality disorder is treatable with psychotherapy, enabling people with BPD to recover and live productive lives.
